White Sox Finish June on Winning Note, Sweep Doubleheader Against Naps

by @ 8:02 am. Filed under 1906 White Sox, 1906 White Sox Diary - June

June 30, 1906 at League Park

White Sox 6, Naps 4  (33-29)

Playing a doubleheader can be tough enough.  Playing a doubleheader when your first game goes twelve innings is even tougher.  Fortunately the White Sox came out on top in their twelve inning thriller over the Naps.

Doc White threw all twelve innings and he gave up four runs on fifteen hits.  He also helped out his own cause and scored two runs.  George Davis had a hit and two runs.

June 30, 1906 at League Park

White Sox 12, Naps 11 (34-29)

The White Sox scored more runs in a game then they had all season to complete their sweep over the Naps, and they needed every one of those runs.  The two teams combined to score 23 runs on 31 hits.

Eight different White Sox scored runs.  Ed Hahn had two hits and three runs and Jiggs Donahue and Bill O’Neill both scored twice.

Jose Contreras Roughed Up in No Decision, Winning Streak Remains Alive

by @ 5:56 pm. Filed under 2006 Season

The Pirates were due.  They had dropped 13 in a row and someone had to be on the receiving against the Pirates, and unfortunately that team was the Sox.  In the meantime, the Tigers continue to win and the White Sox now stand 2 1/2 games back of first place but they’re six games ahead of the Yankees for the wild card.

They won the series with some good pitching.  On Tuesday, Mark Buehrle rode an early three run lead to his ninth win of the season.  He gave up two runs on seven hits and one walk with four strikouts in seven innings of work.  Bobby Jenks saved his 23rd game of the season and Brandon McCarthy pitched a perfect ninth.  Jim Thome drove in two runs and Tad Iguchi had three hits in the 4-2 win.

Yesterday, the Sox came back from three down with four runs in the eighth inning.  Freddy Garcia picked up his tenth win despite giving up ten hits and two homeruns.  Jenks picked up save 24 and Juan Uribe tripled home three runs in that eighth inning.  Final score was 4-3.

Today’s game was the heart breaker.  The Sox were down 6-4 and tied it up with two in the eighth.  Then Freddy Sanchez hit a walk off solo homerun to win it for the Pirates.  Jose Contreras gave up six runs on twelve hits in 5 1/3 innings.  Jim Thome hit his 25th homerun of the season and drove in two in the 7-6 loss.

Next up is rivalry weekend and the Cubs at Wrigley Field.  The Cubs have been down, but you never in series like these.  It’d be nice if they just rolled over.

Jiggs Donahue had three hits in the game but never crossed the plate.  Fielder Jones had two hits and he scored once.

The White Sox bats failed to show in the second game of their doubleheader with the Naps.  The Sox managed only four hits, two of which were by George Davis.

Roy Patterson was hit hard and he gave up five runs on eight hits and a walk.

The White Sox managed only three hits but they made their baserunners count.  They also drew five walks.  Lee Tannehill had two of the White Sox three hits and he scored one of the three runs.

White Sox 4, Browns 0  (30-27)

Frank Owen threw an eight hit shutout as the White Sox snapped their two game miniskid.  Owen struck out one and walked three.

The White Sox scored their four runs on only four hits and their patience at the plate had just as much to do with them getting the win.  With five walks, three of the White Sox who scored didn’t reach on a hit.  Bill O’Neill had two hits and Billy Sullivan had a hit and he scored a run.

White Sox Win Ninth Straight Game on Saturday Before Dropping Series Finale to Astros

by @ 2:37 am. Filed under Uncategorized

The White Sox keep on winning as do the Tigers.  And the more this goes one, the more it looks like the Tigers and White Sox will be competing for who they get to play in the first round more then they’ll be playing for a playoff spot.  Regardless, the Astros came to town and the White Sox took care of business, taking two of three in their weekend series.

On Friday, a grand slam by Scott Podsednik gave the White Sox a 6-0 lead and Jose Contreras kept his winning streak alive.  Contreras is now 8-0 and he gave up four runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings.  The final was 7-4.  Joe Crede has two hits and three runs in the game.

Saturday was a fun game.  The White Sox were down 5-1 and they scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh on Joe Crede’s grand slam to tie the game up.  The game went into extra frames and then in the tenth, Alex Cintron singled home Rob Mackowiak to win the game.  Matt Thorton picked up the win in the 6-5 win after pitching 2 1/3 shutout innings to close out the game.

Last night’s game started out as a blow out before the White Sox stormed back.  Down 9-1, the White Sox scored one in the seventh, three in the eighth and then four in the ninth (another grand slam, this time by Tad Iguchi) to tie the game up.  This time though, the Astros came out on top and they scored a run in the thirteenth to put the game away.  Javier Vazquez was roughed up and Iguchi finished the game with two homeruns and seven RBIs (his three run shot in the eighth accounted for those three runs).

Next up is the lowly Pirates, who have dropped eleven straight games.  We’re still a game and a half back of the Tigers, who swept the Cardinals this weekend.  And not that I’m settling for it right now, but the Sox have a nice, comfy six game lead for the Wild Card so there’s always that to fall back on.

White Sox Destroy Cardinals in Series Sweep

by @ 5:16 pm. Filed under Uncategorized

What a beatdown.  The Cardinals, despite their injuries, are the cream of the crop over in the National League.  They came to the south side and left with their tails between their legs.

On Tuesday, the White Sox scored eleven runs in the third inning and proceeded to score 20 runs on 24 hits in the entire game.  Joe Crede hit two homeruns and he was one of four different players to drive in three runs.  He also scored four times.  Every White Sox starter had at least one hit and one run and ironically the only starter who didn’t drive in a run was Jim Thome.  Javier Vazquez cruised to an easy win and he’s now 8-4.  He gave up two runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts in seven innings.

Of course David Riske and Ozzie Guillen were kicked out of the game after Riske beaned Duncan.  This was after Sidney Ponson hit both Brian Anderson and Pablo Ozuna.

The offensive onslaught continued on Wednesday.  This time it took three different innings to get to ten runs, but by the end of three, the Sox had a 10-3 lead.  The final tally put them at thirteen runs on sixteen hits.  Joe Crede homered again while Jim Thome hit his 23rd .  Paul Konerko drove in four runs and Tad Iguchi knocked in three.  This time it was Buehrle who benefited from the run productoin.  He also improved to 8-4 and he gave up four runs on ten hits with five strikeouts in seven innings.

Yesterday was the antithesis of the previous two games.  The White Sox managed only a single hit in the entire game and fortunately it was a solo homerun by Thome.  Freddy Garcia and Bobby Jenks combined to throw a four hit shutout.

Finally we’re knocking on the Tigers door.  We’ll also miss Roger Clemens as the White Sox play a rematch in what was last year’s World Series because the Astros come to town for the weekend series.

White Sox 2, Americans 1  (27-25)

The White Sox finished their sweep of the Boston Americans.  Nick Altrock not only threw a great game, but he scored the go ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning.  The game was actually scoreless through 7 1/2 innings before the White Sox scored two in the bottom of the eighth.  The Americans scored a single run in the top of the ninth, but couldn’t tie the game up.

Altrock gave up one run on nine hits with two strikeouts.  Ed Hahn scored the other White Sox run to give the team some much need insurance.

White Sox Edge Americans With Fifteenth Inning Win

White Sox 4, Americans 3  (26-25)

It took 15 innings, but the White Sox won their four game series of the Boston Americans.  Frank Owen got the start and he went eleven innings.  Then Nick Altrock notched the win with three innings of one hit relief.

With darkness setting in and with two outs in the bottom of the fifteenth inning, Jiggs Donohue drew a walk.  Tip O’Neill then hit a soft grounder to third and Hobe Ferris, the third baseman, threw the ball well short of first base and the ball went all the way to the wall.  Donohue tried to score all the way from first base and he just beat the first baseman’s throw home.

White Sox Sweep Reds, Keep Pace With Tigers

by @ 12:16 pm. Filed under 2006 Season

The White Sox did it all this weekend.  They blew out the Reds and they also came from behind.  The bad news is, the Tigers look set to win today, so they’ll have swept the Cubs.  So even with the three wins, the White Sox are still a game and a half back.

On Friday, the White Sox jumped out to a nice early lead and Freddy Garcia coasted to an easy win.  Garcia gave up four runs on seven hits through eight innings and he’s now 8-4.  Joe Crede had a monster game.  He went three for five with a homerun, four RBIs and two runs.  Scott Podsednik drove in three and Brian Anderson had two hits and two runs in the 12-4 win.

Saturday was the come from behind win.  The Reds had a 5-3 lead but the White Sox racked up five runs in the final three innings to put the game away.  Jose Contreras struck out 13 in six innings and didn’t get a decision and while he didn’t have his best stuff at times, his winning streak is intact.  Juan Uribe hit his sixth homerun and Pablo Ozuna had three hits and two runs in the 8-6 win.

Today was a pitchers’ duel through five innings.  Aaron Harang then got hit hard but Jon Garland continued to throw well.  He gave up only four hits and one run in eight innings and he’s now 6-3.  He also helped out his own cause with a two run shot in the eighth inning.  Jermaine Dye homered and drove in three runs in the 8-1 win.

St. Louis comes to town for three starting on Tuesday as interleague play continues.  I’m hoping the Tigers go through another rough patch like they did a couple of weeks ago (opportunity missed) and the Sox finally push ahead of them.

Seven of the White Sox eight hits were by Fielder Jones, Frank Isbell and George Davis.  Jones went two for four with a double and two runs, Isbell went two for four with a triple and two runs and Davis had a double, two singles and he scored twice.

White Sox Win Three of Four At Texas, Keep Pace With Tigers in AL Central

by @ 2:34 am. Filed under Uncategorized

Anytime you head out on the road and take three of four games, it’s a solid series.  Unfortunately, the Tigers won their four game series with the Devil Rays, so we’re right back to that game and a half deficit that we had after the weekend.

On Monday, Jose Contreras won his fifteenth game in a row and improved to 7-0.  He gave up three runs but he struck out eleven.  A.J. Pierzynski hit a homerun and drove in two runs while Jim Thome scored twice.

Not to be outdone, Jon Garland picked up the hitting on Tuesday with one his best outings of the year.  The final was 5-2 and Garland improved to 5-3 on the season.  Not bad for a guy with a 6.01 ERA.  Paul Konerko did the bulk of the damage with a three run homerun and Thome scored two more times.

Wednesday was a nasty loss.  Vicente Padilla completely shutdown the White Sox, who managed only four hits the entire game.  Joe Crede had a tough game with three strikeouts.  That was only the second time all season he struck out at least twice in a game.

The Sox got back on track yesterday.  They jumped out to a 5-0 lead after four and Mark Buehrle threw eight solid innings to pick up his seventh win.  Juan Uribe and Jim Thome both homered and Pablo Ozuna had three hits and two RBIs.

The Sox head to Cincinnati for a three game series.  At this point, if we win, things will take care of itself so that’s all I ask.

White Sox Take Two of Three Against Cleveland Before Heading on Road Trip

by @ 3:38 pm. Filed under 2006 Season

Sometimes, you need to win just to keep pace.  And while yesterday’s game was a disappointment, we did win two of three and matched the Tigers so we’re still a game and a half back (one back in the loss column).  The downer is, we’re heading on the road where the White Sox are a .500 team, so a successful road trip will be paramount to staying within striking distance of Detroit.

Friday was Jermaine Dye’s day to shine.  The Indians had a 4-2 lead and Dye’s solo homerun in the sixth made it a one run game, and then in the eighth, he drove in two with a single to give the White Sox a 5-4 win.  Javier Vazquez had a pretty good start (nine strikeouts) but it was Matt Thornton who picked up the win.  Bobby Jenks picked up his eighteenth save of the season.

Saturday we came from behind on two occassions to lock up the series win.  The Indians scored a run in the sixth to make it 2-1 and the White Sox tied it up in the bottom half of the inning.  The game went into extra frames 2-2 and the Indians actually drew first blood when Victor Martinez homered in the top of the eleventh.  Rob Mackowiack and Tad Iguchi came up big with RBI singles in the bottom half of the inning and just like that, the White Sox had two wins in a row.

Yesterday’s game was a downer, and on national television no less.  The Indians jumped out to a 10-2 lead and the White Sox actually made things interesting with six runs in the ninth inning.  Brian Anderson finished the game with three RBIs.

The White Sox head to Texas for four games.  Fortunately we’re up 3-0 early, and the Tigers are down 1-0 to the Devil Rays.  If things stay this way, we’ll be just a game back in the win column.

White Sox Take Two of Three, Now Game And a Half Back of Tigers

by @ 4:28 pm. Filed under 2006 Season

What a strange world we live in.  A three game series in June against the Tigers was made out to be almost like a playoff series.  The Tigers have been playing well and a lot of people are comparing them to the 2005 White Sox, but they have a long way to go to earn that distinction.

This was a great series though.  Alex Cintron filled in for Juan Uribe because Uribe’s wife was expecting to give birth to their son.  And Cintron becomes the unlikely hero in not one game, but two.  His three run homerun on Tuesday gave the White Sox a 4-3 win, and then he broke a 3-3 tie with an RBI single on Wednesday put the White Sox ahead for good.

The only blemish was last night, and once again, Jon Garland struggled.  The White Sox seemed to be biding their time, but the Tigers made their big run earlier and took a commanding four run lead in the sixth inning.  The only offense came on Paul Konerko’s two run shot in the first inning.  And while Jon Garland is 4-3, that overshadows his 6.19 ERA.

The Indians are on deck, and I’m just waiting for them to come out of the game like they did last season.  Fortunately, they just don’t appear to have the arms like they did last year.  So it’ll be interesting if this turns into a two team race down the stretch, or if the Indians can pull another awesome second half out of their hats to make things interesting late in the summer.
