White Sox Split Double Header With Senators

by @ 2:35 am. Filed under 1906 White Sox, 1906 White Sox Diary - September

September 30, 1906 at Southside Park
White Sox 8, Senators 5  (89-55)

The White Sox won their fifth straight game in the opener of a double header with the Washington Senators.  Frank Owen gave up the lead in the fifth inning but the White Sox stormed back and Ed Walsh picked things up nicely out of the pen.  Walsh didn’t give up a hit and walked two batters in 4 2/3 shutout innings.

George Rohe had a big day at the plate.  He singled three times and scored twice.  Ed Hahn walked twice, singled and scored three runs.

September 30, 1906 at Southside Park
Senators 3, White Sox 0  (89-56)

The White Sox five game winning streak came to an end in the second game of a double header with the Washington Senators.  As they’ve done through out the season, the White Sox hardly hit the ball.  They managed only three singles and one walk without scoring a run.

Ed Walsh was bounced after he gave up three runs in the fourth inning.  Frank Smith held the Senators in check the rest of the way but the White Sox couldn’t get their bats going to come back.

White Sox Drop Two of Three to Indians as They Play Out Their Remaining Week

by @ 5:39 am. Filed under 2006 Season, Brandon McCarthy

Alright, the White Sox are now officially done.  They won’t be defending their World Series from last year and while that’s dissappointing, I think White Sox fans know that this team will be right back in the mix next year.

The loss on Monday put us out of it and man was it ugly.  Jon Garland was rocked for twelve runs (eight earned) in 5 1/3 innings.  The Sox only run came in the first on Jim Thome’s sac. fly.  Not pretty.

Tuesday’s game was just as bad.  C.C. Sabathia held the White Sox to four hits Javier Vazquez was a mixed bag.  He gave up six runs but struck out twelve in seven innings of work.  He striking out a lot of the guys he faces, he’s just giving hits just as much.

The White Sox finally pulled out a win in a rain shortened game yesterday.  Brandon McCarthy made his second start of the season and it was a good one.  He gave up one run on two hits with eight strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings of work.  Ross Gload homered in the 2-1 win.

Next up is the Twins, who are the secondary reason why the White Sox aren’t in the playoffs (first is the White Sox themselves).  It’d be nice if we can get a little revenge and take a game or two in this final weekend series.

Frank Owen Throws Well in White Sox Fourth Straight Win

by @ 4:32 pm. Filed under 1906 White Sox, 1906 White Sox Diary - September

September 27, 1906 at Southside Park
White Sox 4, Senators 2  (88-55)

The White Sox came one step closer to their first American League pennant when they beat the Washington Senators 4-2 at home today.  Frank Owen was solid in the win and he gave up two runs on seven hits and one walk with two strikeouts.

The win was a team effort for the offense.  No batter had more then one hit (the team had five total), more then one run or more then one walk (again, five for the game).  The big inning of the game was the sixth inning, in which the White Sox scored three runs.

Ed Walsh Shuts Out Americans In White Sox Third Straight Win

The White Sox extended their American League lead to two games with third straight win over the Boston Americans.  Ed Walsh pitched another shutout and he gave up only six hits in an outstanding pitching performance.

George Davis had the only extra base hit of the game.  He doubled and scored a run.  George Rohe singled twice in the win.

White Sox Take American League Lead With Win Over Americans

by @ 4:28 pm. Filed under 1906 White Sox, 1906 White Sox Diary - September

September 25, 1906 at Southside Park
White Sox 3, Americans 2  (86-55)

The White Sox won their second straight game and with the Highlanders losing, they moved back into first place in the American League.  Nick Altrock picked up his second win in as many days when he relieved Ed White in the third inning.

Fielder Jones made the play of the game.  On a deep fly ball to centerfield, Jones made a tremendous diving catch to not only make the out, but to save an extra base hit.    Americans second baseman Chet Chadbourne never expected the catch to be made and he was already around third when Jones made the catch.  Jones then walked the ball in and completed the double play unassisted by touch second base.

George Davis had the big day at the plate.  He had three hits and a run in the tight win.

White Sox Need a Miracle to Make Playoffs After Series Split With Mariners

by @ 4:35 pm. Filed under 2006 Season

Well, it was a nice run, al beit somewhat disappointing.  In a lot of ways, this White Sox team was better then it’s World Series champion counterpart but that’s why you play the games.  The White Sox need a ton of help and they have to win their next six games to have a shot at the post season.

The early parts of this series were pretty ugly.  On Thursday, Ozzie Guillen spoke and blasted his team, with good reason.  The Mariners blew out the White Sox and Jake Woods of all people shut them out on five hits.  Not much good to say about this game or Friday’s game, which was also a blowout.

Things looked like they would hit rock bottom yesterday, but the White Sox came alive.  Down 7-2, the White Sox scored four runs in the sixth and five in the eighth to turn the tables on the Mariners.  Mark Buehrle was gone in the fifth inning but Charlie Haeger and Bobby Jenks really picked the Sox up out of the pen.  Jim Thome and Paul Konerko both homered and drove in three runs in the 11-7 win.

The White Sox and Mariners combined for 41 hits today but the White Sox put 12 runs on the board to the Mariners 7.  Freddy Garcia was hardly great but he looked awesome compared to what the pen did.  Joe Crede hit homerun number 30 and I’ll get to that in a moment.  Paul Konerko went yard twice and Brian Anderson and Juan Uribe both hit homeruns as well.

A lot of people had written Joe Crede off from ever being a great hitter.  He’s always been one of my favorites (he and Brandon McCarthy) and the past two seasons I predicted he’d break out and hit 30 homeruns.  Last year I was very wrong.  This year I feel redeemed.  Joe Crede definitely has had a fantastic season and hopefully he’ll cap it off with a Gold Glove.  Unfortunately he won’t be able to continue his run in the playoffs.

Next up is three at Cleveland.  It’s do or die, and a loss the rest of the way is unacceptable.

White Sox Move Back Into Tie For First With Win Over Americans

White Sox 4, Americans 1  (85-55)

The White Sox once again tied the Highlanders for first place in the American League with a win over the Boston Americans.  Nick Altrock pitched the White Sox to victory and he gave up only a single run on five hits and one walk with two strikeouts.

The White Sox not only racked up eight hits, but they drew eight walks as well.  Patsy Dougherty had two hits and a run and Jiggs Donahue walked twice, singled and scored a run.

The White Sox lost their final game against the Highlanders in a solid pitchers dual.  The loss put them a game back of the first place New York Highlanders with about two weeks left in the season.

The White Sox were completely shut down on offense.  They managed only two hits the entire game and a great start by Ed Walsh went to waste. He gave up one run on five hits and three walks with seven strikeouts.

The White Sox won in a big way against their American League nemisis.  By blowing out the Highlanders 7-1, the White Sox moved back into a tie with the Highlanders for first place in the American League.

Doc White held the Highlanders to a single run on five hits.  He struck out five and walked nobody in the win.

On offense, Fielder Jones and Frank Isbell led the way.  Fielder Jones was three for three with a homerun and Isbell tripled, singled and scored two runs.

White Sox Come Up Short Twice in Huge Series Against Highlanders

September 21, 1906 at Southside Park
Highlanders 6, White Sox 3  (83-53)

The White Sox lost to the Highlanders in the first game of their doubleheader and in the process, slipped into a tie with New York for first place in the American League.  Ed Walsh took a 3-3 tie into the ninth inning only to yield three more as the Highlanders doubled up the Sox.  Walsh struck out seven batters.

Walsh did help out his own cause at the plate because he led the way with the bat.  He singled twice and scored two of the White Sox three runs.

September 21, 1906 at Southside Park
Highlanders 4, White Sox 1  (83-54)

The White Sox were held to a single run on only three hits as they were swept by the now first place New York Highlanders.  This game lasted only six innings due to rain.

Frank Owen was knocked around to the tune of four runs on ten hits.  Patsy Dougherty scored the only run of the game for the White Sox.

White Sox in Dire Straits After Series Loss to Tigers

by @ 2:44 am. Filed under 2006 Season

Ten games left.  That’s all the White Sox have to make up a 5 1/2 game deficit.  Even worse, it’s six games in the loss column.  So the White Sox have little margin for error.  They might be able to lose one game the rest of the way, but if they don’t go 9-1 in their final ten games, they’re most likely not going to make the playoffs.  Heck, even if they do go 9-1 they might not make the playoffs.  They have to make up three games over the next seven days and that’s just to enter their season ending series with the Twins three back.

White Sox fans have to have mixed feelings.  I know I do.  The White Sox came out of nowhere last season and won their first World Series in almost 90 years.  They actually have a better team on paper this year and it looks like they’re not even going to be playing meaningful October baseball.  While I appreciate what happened last year, it’s tough to take right now.

Next up is a four game series against the Mariners.  It’d do or die so nothing short of a sweep will get the job done.

A’s Snap White Sox Seven Game Win Streak in One Run Game

September 19, 1906 at Southside Park
Athletics 4, White Sox 3  (83-52)

The White Sox seven game winning streak came to an end today with both teams having late inning flurries.  With the A’s up 2-1, they scored two runs in the top of the ninth, only to have the White Sox respond with two in the bottom of the ninth.  Unfortunately, the Sox couldn’t complete the come back and they lost their first game in a week.

Nick Altrock gave up four runs on eight hits in the ball game.  He struck out three and walked one.

All the White Sox could manage were five hits in the loss.  Ed Hahn had a solid game leading off.  He went one for two with two walks and a run.

Frank Owen Shuts Out A’s In White Sox Seventh Straight Win

September 18, 1906 at Southside Park
White Sox 7, Athletics 0  (83-51)

The White Sox won their seventh straight game with some solid hitting and great pitching.  Frank Owen pitched a five hit shutout and for the Hitless Wonders, that normally might have been neccesary for a win.  Fortunately, the White Sox gave Owen plenty of runs, and they gave them to him early.

George Rohe had a big day at the plate.  He went three for three with a walk and run.  Owen doubled twice and scored and Jiggs Donahue walked four times in the win.

White Sox Playoff Chances Look Sketchy After Sweep in Oakland

by @ 5:32 pm. Filed under 2006 Season

This is not looking good.  With only two weeks to play, the White Sox dropped three straight games to the A’s and now sit five games back of the Tigers and four back of the Twins for the Wild Card.  There’s not a lot of room for error in the next two weeks.

Jon Garland had been our best pitcher of late, and while he was good on Friday, Esteban Loaiza was even better.  Garland dropped to 17-5 and he gave up three runs on nine hits and two walks with one strikeout in 5 2/3 innings.  Rob Mackowiak hit his fifth homerun of the season in the 4-2 loss.

Frank Thomas came back to haunt the White Sox yesterday.  He drove in four runs in the White Sox 7-4 loss.  Again, Javier Vazquez was good but not great and the pen really got roughed up.  Jermaine Dye hit homerun number 42 and both he and Sandy Alomar, Jr. each drove in two runs.

This afternoon was more Frank Thomas and boy did he get some paybacks in this series.  Jose Contreras was knocked around in his six innings and A.J. Pierzynski hit his 15th homerun of the season in the 5-4 loss.

This week is huge.  The White Sox play three against the Tigers and if we’re going to have a chance to make the playoffs, we need to win all three.  The White Sox have owned the Tigers most of the past few years, so it’s time to keep up that trend.

The White Sox made it six straight wins in their series opener with the A’s.  Ed Walsh was roughed up and gave up four runs on eleven hits in eleven innings, but fortunately the White Sox offense picked things up and scored in the bottom of the eleventh to win the game.  Walsh struck out an amazing 12 batters.

George Davis singled and scored two runs.  Jiggs Donahue had two hits and a run in the win.

The White Sox needed to get their bats going to secure their fourth straight win over the Browns.  The win put the White Sox in first place for the American League pennant with a little over three weeks to play.

Frank Owen was roughed up for four runs but the offense picked him up and he walked away with the win.  George Davis had two hits, including a triple and he scored twice.  Jiggs Donahue singled, walked and scored two runs in the big win.

White Sox Sweep Doubleheader Over Browns, Now Tied With Giants For First Place In AL

White Sox 4, Browns 3  (78-51)

The White Sox edged the Browns in game one of their doubleheader. George Davis led the way at the plate.  He had two singles and he scored one of the White Sox runs.

Nick Altrock was just good enough to walk away with the win.  He gave up three runs on seven hits.  Things looked shaky after he gave up a run in the eighth but he buckled down and finished the game out for the win.

September 14, 1906 at Southside Park
White Sox 3, Browns 0  (79-51)

The White Sox won their third straight game, swept their doubheader against the Browns and moved into a tie for first place with the New York Giants.  Ed Walsh was awesome and he pitched a three hit shutout to secure the win.

Jiggs Donahue got things done with the bat.  He had two singles and he scored one of the White Sox’ three runs.

Freddy Garcia Nearly Perfect in Win Over Angels

by @ 2:32 am. Filed under 2006 Season

The more things change, the more they stay the same.  The standings look eerily familiar with the Twins a game and a half back of the Tigers and then the White Sox a game and a half back of the Twins.  The Twins play today so that half game thing will be wiped clean but regardless, the White Sox goal is to keep winning.

Bobby Jenks held on to win on Monday.  The White Sox scored three in the fifth inning but the Angels crept back into it with a single run in the sixth.  Then in the ninth, Jenks got into trouble but got out of it with a big double play.  Jose Contreras improved to 13-7 and he gave up one run on six hits and one walk with eight strikeouts over eight innings.

Tuesday’s game was tough and it stopped the White Sox from pulling out a sweep.  Once again, the White Sox scored three in the fifth but this time it was to take a 3-2 lead.  The Angels tied it up in the sixth and then neither team’s pen yielded a run until Jenks gave up an RBI single to Chone Figgins to end it.  A solid start by Mark Buehrle went to waste and Jenks dropped to 3-4 on the season.

Yesterday was all Freddy Garcia.  He took a perfect game into the eighth inning but a single broke that up so he had to settle for a one hit combined shutout with Neil Cotts.  Paul Konerko went four for four with two RBIs and Tad Iguchi scored three times in the 9-0 loss.

If you’re an optimist, this weekend’s series with the A’s could be a preview of a first round playoff matchup.  It’s huge though because there’s not a lot of games left in the season.

The White Sox were blown out by the St. Louis Browns for their second straight loss.  Frank Owen gave up three runs in the first inning and he was pulled after that in favor of Frank Smith

White Sox Fall One More Game in Wild Card Race After Split With Indians

by @ 2:15 am. Filed under 2006 Season

At this point, we might catch the Tigers before we catch the Twins.  The White Sox play them sooner and the Twins just don’t seem to want to lose.  The bad news is, the White Sox enter the portion of their schedule where things get tough and this week is the time to play out of our minds.

Cleveland took the first game in this series in a blow out loss for the White Sox.   Mark Buehrle slipped back to .500 and he lasted only four innings.  He gave up five runs (four earned) on ten hits and a walk.  The only White Sox run came on Jermaine Dye’s RBI single in the sixth inning.

Friday’s game was a roller coaster.  The White Sox took a 5-3 lead into the ninth but Bobby Jenks blew it when he gave up three doubles and summarily three runs.  The White Sox magic from last year hasn’t completely disappeared though.  A.J. Pierzynski hit a two run walk off homerun in the bottom of the ninth to win it.  Freddy Garcia didn’t get a decision for a solid start and Juan Uribe hit his seventeenth homerun in the 7-6 win.

Saturday’s game started out as a blowout.  The White Sox jumped out to a 10-1 lead, but a seven run seventh inning by the Indians made things very interesting.  Jon Garland threw six solid innings and won his 17th game while Boone Logan and Brandon McCarthy got knocked around for most of those seven runs.  Paul Konerko hit two homeruns and he drove in five while Juan Uribe and Jermaine Dye also went deep.

A great start by Javier Vazquez went to waste yesterday.  He gave up two runs on four hits and two walks with ten strikeouts in seven innings.  Brandon McCarthy gave up two ninth inning runs and he took the loss.  He dropped to 3-7 on the season.  Tad Iguchi was the offense in the 5-2 loss.  He hit a two run shot to account for all of the White Sox runs.  It was his fifteenth of the season.

The White Sox now hop on a plane and head to Anaheim to play the Los Angeles Angels for three games.  They do get a day off on Thursday to head over to Oakland.  This isn’t the best time to have a west coast swing, but so be it.

Tigers Edge White Sox With Ninth Inning Run

Bill O’Neill had two of the White Sox five hits and Fielder Jones scored the only run.  In the bottom of the ninth, George Davis tried to reach first on a bunt and apparantly made it, but the umpire blew the call.  A number of bottles came down on the umpire a disgraceful display by the fans, but fortunately he was able to get off the field without getting seriously hurt.

Frank Isbell scored three times and George Davis had three hits to the lead way on offense for the White Sox.

The White Sox made it three straight wins with a close on over the Tigers.  The White Sox took a 2-2 tie into the eighth, took the lead in the eighth and then added an insurance run in the ninth.  That last run was much needed because the Tigers scored one in the ninth but were held back before they could tie the game.

Roy Patterson struck out eleven and gave up three runs on eleven hits.  Fielder Jones, Frank Isbell and Jiggs Dononhue each had two hits and a run in the win.

White Sox End Three Game Skid With Blowout Win Over Red Sox

by @ 2:18 am. Filed under 2006 Season

Is it time to get worried yet?  As if you weren’t already, the White Sox still haven’t managed to get over the hump and they trail the Twins by a half game.

On Monday, Bobby Jenks blew his third save of the year and the Red Sox sent the game into extra frames.  Then Brandon McCarthy gave up a solo homerun to Carlos Pena of all people to end it in the tenth.  Jim Thome hit his 38th homerun of the season in the 3-2 loss.

Tuesday’s loss was just as tough.  Javier Vazquez threw a gem but he gave up one run, which was more then the White Sox offense gave him.  He struck out eleven and gave up only three hits in the 1-0 loss.

Jim Thome and Jose Contreras got the job done yesterday and the White Sox ended their skid.  Thome went four for four with three runs and a homerun.  Jermaine Dye hit homerun number 40.  Jose Contreras won his 12th game with a solid outing.  He gave up one run on four hits and one walk with nine strikeouts in eight innings.

It’s sad to say, but I’ll actually be rooting for the Tigers for the rest of the week.  The Twins and Tigers square off and the White Sox host the Indians.  It’d be nice to have that Wild Card lead back by Sunday.

Nick Altrock was pummelled in the opener of a double header between the White Sox and Naps.  Altrock gave up four runs in only 2 2/3 innings.  Roy Patterson didn’t fare much better and he gave up six runs the rest of the way.

Frank Isbell, George Davis and Patsy Dougherty all had two hits in the game.

September 3, 1906 at Cleveland
White Sox 4, Naps 3  (72-49)

Game two of the White Sox/Naps doubleheader was closer, but the result was the same.  And because of the back to back losses, the White Sox fell from their perch in the American League and were now on the outside looking as far as heading towards their first World Series.

Frank Owen gave up four runs on thirteen hits in the loss.  Frank Isbell had two hits and two runs and Babe Towne got on base three times.
