From Joe Jackson to Frank Thomas, A Look at the Chicago White Sox, Both Past and Present

Gload was arbitration eligible so this is one more guy the White Sox don’t have to worry about. Gload signed for $625,000 and he hit an impressive .327 in 156 at bats. He can play outfield and first base and he’s one of those multidimensional guys that Ozzie Guillen likes to have around. Not a bad pick up for the price.
I picked this one up on Baseball Musings but it looks like there’s some speculation that Joe Crede could be traded for Angels utility man Chone Figgins. Seems the Angels are in the market for some power since they were rebuffed by Alfonso Soriano (and now Carlos Lee) and without a legitimate starter at third base, they figure the White Sox might want to part ways with Crede.
This would be just the kind of trade Ozzie Guillen would go for. Figgins is one of those productive out, stolen base utility guys that Guillen likes and the White Sox do have a third baseman in the pipe line. So the deal isn’t out of the realm of possibility.
It’s unlikely that Jermaine Dye will win the AL MVP. In fact he’ll probably finish no better then third behind David Ortiz and Derek Jeter. That doesn’t mean what he accomplished this season went unnoticed. Jermaine Dye won the Player’s Choice awards for the AL’s outstanding player. He clubbed 44 homeruns and drove in 120. Congratulations to Dye.
One of my favorite Sox writers, MLB.com beat writer Scott Merkin, answered his mail the other day. The biggest question asked is how Joe Crede got jobbed for the Gold Glove. I know when Derek Jeter won his first (he’s now won three straight) the award turned into kind of a joke but I think Eric Chavez, while a great fielder in his own right, was the third best fielder in the American League. I could have lived with Brandon Inge winning it, but it looks like the voters just made the easy and familiar choice.
He also talks about Tim Raines departure and the chances that the White Sox try to sign Frank Thomas. It’s a solid read as always.
Nothing too spectacular here but the White Sox signed Luis Terrero to a minor league contract. If he makes the big league club, he’ll make a solid $410,000. He played centerfield for the Orioles last year but he was a product of the Diamondbacks orgnization. In 434 career at bats, Terrero is a .235 hitter. If he makes the team, it’ll be as a fifth outfielder.
